Offering by Johann Lund 1831, depicting a horse being led to a statue of Thor for sacrifice.

Offering by JL Lund #ThrowbackThorsday for 3/5/15

“Offering” by Johann Ludwig Lund, 1831. This image depicts a “blót,” or sacrificial ritual, where a horse (in the background) is brought before a carving of Thor. The meat is boiled and eaten; the blood is considered an important part of the ritual and sprinkled on idols, walls, and worshipers. And while this seems like a lot of information, do note that like much of the Norse religion, most knowledge about the ancient rites has been lost.
